I have owned various multi tools over the years, but never had that much use for them. I have packed one for adjusting saddles and horse gear whilst on the go for a while but wasn't too pleased with them.
For the most part they are a group of inadequate mini features with way too many ornaments and toys fitted to be very useful for anything except the most simple of tasks.
When the better quality tools became available they were big and bulky again, perhaps with too many unnecessary tools attached. For a shortwhile it seemed that the multi tool manufacturer's aimed to make the biggest oversized, heaviest pocket tool around. It reminded me of the mobile phone race with so many trying to pack the most stuff as possible into a multi tool. It got pretty odd for a while.
For canoe journeys I regularly packed a little tool kit with what I figured I would use instead of a heavy tool. It weighed in at a bit over a pound but I expected it to get used at least once on a longer trip. The kit usually consisted of a small stubby screwdriver, a set of pliers, some spare screws, and some wire. I have just learned about a multi tool that does make sense to bring with me though.
Funnily enough, they have been for sale for a while but I neglected them. A while back, I needed to fit a shower attachment but had no tools. I ended up doing it with only a can opener and a pair of scissors. I thought this would be a perfect time to start carrying my multi tool again. I digged through the junk drawer and it appeared later that night, I then remembered why it ended up there initially. Because it was junk.

At only 5 ounces it could sit in my pocket without notice most of the time and it eliminated the need for two items from my tool kit. The brilliant point is that for the world of camping where you might need to fix a gas stove, a metal buckle on a rucksack, the zip on a tent, or tighten up a broken canoe seat; the Skeletool is everything you need without any of the fluff.
First off the pliers are normally standard for multi tools. They have built in wire cutters and they go through coat hangers reasonably easily so will cope with the brass wire I carry.
Next the blade, easy open with one hand using a thumb hole. The blade was so sharp it could chop the corner off a sheet of paper without any issues.
The screwdriver attachment is supplied with a couple of phillips and two slotted bits. The bits are Leatherman proprietary as opposed to industry standard, however they do lock into the unit with a spring clip. The extra one is tucked away in the handle and is a friction fit.
In summary, its well designed and put together by my standards - I am pretty fussy with stuff like this. I purchased my Leatherman Skeletool at Leatherman Store and they also sell the Leatherman Skeletool CX.
